About James and Igotta3 Disc Golf

Hi, I’m James. I found this glorious sport in 2001. I had recently graduated from UNCC and loved “Ball” Golf, but couldn’t afford it, which is how I learned about disc golf. I purchased an Innova, ACE and a Wolf, from Walmart of all places as my first discs. Then I attempted my first round at the Charlotte course, Reedy Creek, and the rest is history. While spending time at Hornet’s Nest, I met Pro Disc Golfer, Michael Johansen, and he changed the way I threw side arm with one simple suggestion: “Have you tried throwing with just one finger under the rim?”

From that day on, I have used only the one finger under rim grip for my side arms. I also realized you can teach someone a lot with just one suggestion. Thank you, Micheal JO!

In 2003 I joined the PDGA, #22310. Since then, I have competed in over 163 sanctioned tournaments with 31 wins. The game has given so much to me over the years, from lifelong friends, to business ventures, to running tournaments, starting a non-profit, and even helping run the 2021 Amateur World Championships. Our sport carries a unique family type environment; we’ve grown so much in the last decade yet you still feel like you know people at the large global events.

I have participated in 8 World championships. 2nd in 2021 and 5th 2023 are my highest placements.
